About Arpeggi

Arpeggi / REZ / cerulean japanned progresses the study, which alongside the gilded and silvered versions, represent the original three drawings in the Arpeggi series.

Later on, I worked up white and black editions, and a crimson piece, effectively three primary studies and three tonal studies, which are editioned in the Arpeggi / FOLIO, a set of six smaller works on paper, presented in a clamshell box.

Cerulean japanned can be viewed as a falling wall of water and makes some reference to the extraordinarily beautiful images of fish, often carp, produced as woodblock prints in Japan, over several centuries. Japanese woodblock printmaking remains hugely influential, incorporating as it does, amazing images of nature, with a use of line and colour that in many ways remain unsurpassed to this day.
