About the commission

Octavia Gallery, New Orleans, contacted me to acquire four unframed works for installation at Memorial Sloan Kettering, a specialist cancer care hospital in New York state.

I'm sometimes a little concerned about displaying my pieces in work settings, it can seem a little impersonal, but in fact I think there's a real buzz in knowing that a lot of people will pass by the work, and hopefully enjoy them, whilst they're in the hospital, so on reflection, it was great to be included.

Memorial Sloan Kettering is dedicated to incorporating art within its clinical settings, and holds a sensational collection of works, including pieces by superstar glass artist Dale Chihuly. There’s a lot of writing and thinking around art, creativity, therapy and healthcare, and a lot of energy goes into the design of modern clinical settings, with a focus on art and it’s wider community benefits. Here in the UK, that work is perhaps most beautifully realised by Maggie’s centres, who have created a network of inspirationally well designed facilities for their medical and therapeutic practice.

The editions were supplied unframed, which allows them to be sent carefully packed in a strong tube by post, with the gallery then taking care of sourcing slimline white frames at their end, prior to installation.

Lovely to get these great photos of the work in situ back from the gallery a few weeks later.
