About the commission

I've been working with Michael Boitier, who runs the Workplace Art Consultancy, for well over a decade now. He specialises in placing work into people’s workplaces, and has a good eye for it.

On this occasion, we installed all six variants from my Arpeggi / FOLIO in a sleekly designed contemporary meeting room. Each piece simply presented in a glazed and painted tulipwood frame.

The Arpeggi / FOLIO was my first attempt at creating a set of works based around a single geometry or drawing. It takes the idea of making three primary colour studies; red, yellow and blue, and sets these alongside three tonal studies; white, black and grey, to form the set. It's a really enjoyable way to work, as you can explore the possibilities of the piece more thoroughly through the range of variations.

In its original form, the folio is presented in a limited edition clamshell box. I commissioned the box from historic UK box makers G. Ryder & Co. Ltd, who are notable for having made storage boxes for both the Houses of Parliament and for Stanley Kubrick, who apparently used to obsessively store possessions in a warehouse, racked with shelves for the catalogued boxes.
