About Stellify

I became interested in Origami a few years back. Of course, there’s always been a love of paper and ink, but the idea of constructing sculptural forms from paper folding alone is something that my oldest son got into quite a few years back, that I’ve observed with fascination.

So for this piece I enrolled his help to create a truly complex woven modular Origami model that then formed the basis for this study, albeit quite a long way down in the mix.

Stellify is derived from a modular model of the fourteenth stellation of an icosahedron, blended with some of the essence of Dale Chihuly’s extraordinary studio glass creations, that has ultimately delivered a drawing that is almost organic in feel.

The way the drawing morphed as I worked on it made for a really interesting journey, perhaps because I felt that I knew what I wanted from the study, as it resolutely refused to bend to my whim.

I’m not sure what I think of the final edition, it’s probably a little too baroque for my taste, but ultimately, as with any work, it has a life of its own, and needs to escape the studio to find its own place, wherever that may be.

I made several iterations of the drawing, initially editioning this teal base version for my Current at Catto show.

Stellify takes some further inspiration from Ian Brown’s track of the same name too of course…
